How to apply: Australia
An Australian visa photo is attached in ImmiAccount as a 'Facial image' for every applicant, including children. The file must be a JPG between 70 KB and 3.5 MB, and Home Affairs gives 1200 x 1600 pixels as the preferred resolution. A scan of a photo, or a photograph of a photo, is not accepted.
Home Affairs has no separate visa photo page: ImmiAccount links to its photo requirements page. The head from chin to crown must measure 32 to 36 mm on a 35 x 45 mm frame, and the photo must be no more than 6 months old.
The background must be neutral or light grey and contrast with the face. Home Affairs does not list white, and one of its own rejected examples is captioned as not neutral or light grey. It also advises against online photo services and mobile apps, and recommends a professional passport photo provider who emails you the digital copy.
Why photos get rejected here
A white background
Use a neutral or light grey background. White is not what Home Affairs lists for this photo.
An edited photo
Do not remove the background, moles, wrinkles, scars or red eye. The photo must be unedited.
A scan or a photo of a photo
Upload a photo taken directly with a camera. A scan of a print is refused.
Glasses without a medical reason
Glasses must be removed unless they cannot be for medical reasons; poor eyesight alone is not a reason.
Hair over the face
Hair must be off the face so its edges are visible, and the head must not be tilted.
What helps
Keep the camera far enough away
Home Affairs asks for at least 1.2 metres between camera and subject, with the camera at eye level and even, shadowless light.
Check the file size
Stay between 70 KB and 3.5 MB. 1200 x 1600 pixels is the preferred resolution.
One image per applicant
Attach a separate facial image for each person on the application, including children.
Use grey, not white
A light grey wall is the safest choice for this photo.
Babies and young children
For children under 3 years of age a photo with an open mouth is acceptable. Every other rule still applies, and no other person or object may be visible.

Glasses
Glasses must be removed unless they cannot be removed for medical reasons. Vision impairment alone is not a reason.
Passport photo glasses rules by country
Head covering
Religious head coverings must be plain, without patterns, and must show the whole face from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead, including the outer corners of the eyes.
Applying online
Attach one 'Facial image' per applicant: a JPG between 70 KB and 3.5 MB, preferably 1200 x 1600 pixels. Scans and photos of photos are not accepted.
