  • Look straight into the camera with the eyes clearly open; hair must not cover the eyes.
  • The head must be upright and not turned to either side, with no smile and the mouth closed.
  • Lighting must fall evenly on the face, with no reflection, no shadow and no red eye.
  • Tinted lenses and sunglasses are not accepted and a spectacle frame must not cover the eyes.
  • In photographs with a headscarf the face must be visible from the tip of the chin to the forehead, no shadow may fall on the face and the colour of the scarf must differ from the colour of the background.

How to apply: Türkiye

A Turkish driving licence (sürücü belgesi) uses the same biometric photograph as the Turkish identity card and passport. The Interior Ministry's 2018 circular sets one photo standard for all three documents, and the NVI driving licence FAQ asks for one biometric photograph taken within the last 6 months that meets the ICAO standard. The print is 50 x 60 mm.

You bring the printed photo to the application. It is scanned into the system at the counter and handed back to you, so the print itself does not stay on file; what matters is that it is sharp, evenly lit and biometric. Photocopies, computer-duplicated images and photos that are not biometric are refused.

Applications are made at one of the district civil registry offices (ilçe nüfus müdürlüğü), at a Turkish mission abroad or through a Nüfusmatik kiosk, usually with an appointment booked by phone or online. The face should take up about 70 to 80 percent of the photo, on a plain background without pattern or shadow.

Why photos get rejected here

  • A photocopy or a reprint of an old photo

    NVI refuses photocopies, computer-duplicated images and non-biometric photos. Bring an original print taken within the last 6 months.

  • The wrong size

    The Turkish biometric photo is 50 x 60 mm. A 35 x 45 mm print cut for other countries does not fit this standard.

  • A shadow or patterned background

    Use a plain background with no pattern and no shadow: white suits dark hair, a mid-tone grey suits light hair.

  • Smiling or a turned head

    The head must be upright and facing the camera, with no smile and the mouth closed.

  • Tinted glasses or glare

    Tinted lenses and sunglasses are not accepted, and the frame must not cover the eyes.

    The same biometric photo standard applies to the identity card and the passport, so a recent photo taken for one can serve the others while it is under 6 months old.

  • Print on photo paper

    Print the 50 x 60 mm file at a photo lab so the print is sharp and stain-free.

  • Book an appointment

    Book the application through the NVI appointment system by phone or online, then take a queue number at the registry office on the day.

Glasses

Glasses may be worn if the eyes are clearly visible with no reflection. Tinted lenses and sunglasses are not accepted, and the frame must not cover the eyes.
